More Signings Announced;
Lawrence Says Best Ever

By CLARK EMERSON

Don Lawrence's string of
successful signings continued
over the semester break as the
University's head football
coach announced the inking of
four more high school athletes;
for a total of 25 commitments.

The only in-state recruit,
Butch Powers, a 6-1, 205
pound defensive end,
represented Richmond's
Hermitage High School on the
all-region and all-metro squads.

Dennis Kuczynski, a 6-2,
225 pound interior lineman on
both offense and defense was a
team tri-captain. He is an
honor roll student at
Normandy High School in
Seven Hills, Ohio.

Larry Mills, a 6-2, 155
pound quarterback from
Chattanooga, Tenn., was his
team's MVP, all-city, and
honorable mention all-state. In
an eight game season, he
completed 60 of 122 passes for
1078 yards and six
touchdowns.

The fourth signee, Don
Flow, was plucked from under
the nose of rival Wake Forest
in Winston-Salem, N.C. The
highly recruited fullback, 6-1,
195 pounds, was selected first
team all-state and was chosen
for the North Carolina-South
Carolina Shrine Bowl.

The last three mark an
increase in out-of-state signings
predicted for the winter's end
by recruiter Jim West.

With well over half of a
maximum 38 scholarships
allotted, Lawrence seems very
pleased with his staff's
progress. "Our start for '73 has
been the best since I've been at
Virginia," he said.

Of the announced signees,
the largest is 6-5, 270 pound
tackle Dennis Hackworth and
the smallest, 5-8, 155 pound
flanker Tom Fadden, both
from Virginia. Most are on the
taller side of six feet and weigh
in excess of 190 pounds.

Disregarding the size factor,
Fadden on paper may be
Lawrence's most outstanding
recruit. Playing for state
champion Annandale, he
collected almost 1500 yards
during his 68 receptions and
averaged a score every seventh
catch.
