Southern Cal Continues Its Lead
Over Closing Sooners In UPI Poll

By DOUG DOUGHTY

Southern Cal, Oklahoma
and Alabama continued as the
top three teams in the nation
this week in the UPI coaches'
poll released yesterday.

Oklahoma moved closer to
the top spot, however, as the
Sooners now claim 12 of the
35 first-place votes cast and
only trail the Trojans by a
scant margin of ten votes.
Southern Cal received 22
first-place tallies and the
Crimson Tide a lone vote for
supremacy.

Southern Cal reinforced its
ranking with a 42-14 slaying of
in-state rival California, while
Oklahoma, paced by a
ferocious punt-blocking,
fumble-causing defensive
platoon, upended Texas for the
first shutout of the Longhorns
since 1963. Alabama outscored
Florida, 24-7.

Nebraska, the sole team in
the top eight to lose a game,
crushed Missouri 62-0, after a
77-0 humiliation of Army the
previous week. 'The
Cornhuskers inched into fourth
this week, immediately in front
of Ohio State, Michigan, LSU
and Notre Dame.

The Bayou Tigers had
probably the most impressive
week, routing previously–
unbeaten Auburn, 35-7,
Saturday night. Ohio St. and
Michigan prepped against
weaker Big Ten foes, while the
Fighting Irish had an off week.

UCLA, 37-7 victor over
Oregon is in ninth, while now
tenth-ranked Colorado won its
first big game of the season,
upending previously-ranked
Iowa State, 34-22.
