Ruggers Register First Loss

By G.D. ROTHENBERG

The Rugby Club's A siders
blew a 10-4 halftime lead
Sunday and lost 16-10 to a
fired-up George Washington
Rugby Club.

The final result was in
doubt until the closing seconds
when GW, minus a man out for
an injury, contained the
ruggers' last-gasp effort to tie
up the score.

Scoring for the ruggers were
George McCallum and
ex-Wahoo linebacker Boyd
"Possum" Page. Peter Schmidt
also booted in a two-point
conversion after Page had
bulldozed his way to four
points.

Player-coach Jay Waldron
opined that ruggers put up a
struggle but were not especially
sharp in the second half. "Our
scrum let us down toward the
end. There were also a couple
of missed easy tackles."

Waldron felt "we continued
the play. They never
threatened – they just broke
away a few times."

Breaking away for the
Yellow Jackets for two scores
was former All-Conference
defensive back Tommy Metz
who electrified the crowd with
his rabbit-quick darts around
and through a befuddled Va.
defense.

"The difference was their
deep back, Metz, who broke
away," added McCallum.

In other local action, the
University's "C" side collapsed
to George Washington's "B"
side 32-4. The "E" side settled
for a 16-16 tie.
