Tankers Lose 70-43
For Sixth Defeat

By BILL BERNO

The Cavalier tankers fell to
East Carolina University,
70-43, in a swim meet last
Friday at Memorial
Gymnasium pool, as they
suffered their sixth loss in
seven decisions.

The foursome of Gerry
Rollins, Bill Carvell, Warner
Chapman, and co-captain Gary
Chewning gave the Cavaliers an
early seven point lead as they
won the medley relay in
3:53.4. However, the next five
events were captured by ECU
as they took control for good.
Mark Bernardino was edged in
the 1000 freestyle, and
co-captain Joel Curtis was
nipped in the 200 freestyle.

In the 50-yard freestyle, the
Pirates grabbed a surprising 1-2
sweep to surge ahead, 20-14. In
the required diving, the
Cavaliers could only manage a
second and fell further behind.

Bernardino followed up his
second place finish in the 1000
with a convincing victory in his
specialty, the 200 butterfly.
His time of 2:04.9 was far
from his personal best, but it
still provided him with a
winning margin of over five
seconds. Once again the Cavs
were nipped, as both Pirates
out touched Carvell for second
and third.

Chewning and the Pirates'
Frederick both clocked 51.0
for the 100-year freestyle, but
Frederick was awarded the first
place and Chewning was forced
to settle for second.

East Carolina dealt a final
crushing blow by defeating a
Cavalier 800 freestyle relay
that was loaded with Curtis,
Chewning, Bernardino, and Jim
Wilson.

The score is not indicative
of the closeness of the meet, as
in many events the winning
margin was measured in inches.
In every close event, the Pirates
managed to reach the wall first.
It was a bitter defeat for Coach
Good and his team.

Virginia winds up its dual
meet season when it travels to
Washington and Lee Friday to
swim the Generals.
