UNC Dominates Conference
In Statistics And On Field

This week's ACC statistical
standings place the Cavaliers fifth in
total offense and fourth in defense,
while their next opponent,
league-leading North Carolina, is on
top in both categories.

Offensively, the balance of the
Cavalier attack is pointed up, as
they place fourth in both rushing
and passing, averaging 148 yards
per game on the ground and 106
through the air.

Wake Forest, with its Veer
offense, is in good position to break
the ACC team rushing record. With
two games remaining the Deacons
need only 437 yards to surpass the
existing mark of 3,137. They are
currently averaging 300 yards per
game on the ground.

On defense, the Wahoos have
also failed to distinguish
themselves. Against the rush, they
stand fifth, giving up 185 yards a
game, while the pass defense which
held, VPI's Don Strock, the
nation's number one passer, to a
sub par performance last week,
places third.

The bright spot for Virginia is
split end Bob Davis, who leads the
league in receptions with 36. Davis
has a margin of seven over Dan
Bungori of Maryland, his nearest
opposition.

In passing offense, the Cavaliers
have two of the top eight
quarterbacks, with Larry Albert in
third place and Harrison Davis in
sixth.

Kent Merritt is another
individual stand-out placing third in
rushing offense with 697 yards and
a 4.4 yard average per carry. The
league leader is Wake Forest's Larry
Hopkins, the only ACC back to
gain over 1000 yards this season.
