Field Hockey Club
Starts Successfully

Almost halfway through its first
season at the University, the
Women's Field Hockey Club has
formed two squads. Despite many
rainouts, the "A" platoon has won
two out of three games while its
"B" team counterpart has lost each
of its contests.

The opening game of the
campaign, with Roanoke College,
was postponed as was a weekend
meeting with Eastern Mennonite
College, also early in the slate. The
Field Hockey Club had its initial
competition of the season against
Randolph-Macon, at Lynchburg,
and emerged victorious 2-1. The
"B" team was not so successful: it
lost to R-MWC's "JV's", 2-0, the
same day.

Rain, the Field Hockey Club's
alter ego this year, bedeviled the
girls in their home opener against
Lynchburg College. Obscured by
the tenacity of a rugged defensive
battle, a Lynchburg tally in the
opening minutes held up as the
Hornets triumphed 1-0. The
Lynchburg "JV's" also won, sliding
to a 2-1 victory.

Breaking the home field "jinx",
the Field Hockey team took its
biggest victory of the season, last
Thursday, against Sweet Briar. The
University, threatening throughout
the second half after a slow start,
gained the upper hand in the
soon-to-be-traditional struggle when
center halfback Connie Nimmo
riddled the "Sweets" defense for a
score late in the second half.

The "B" squad, "steadily
improving during the season", did
not see action against Sweet Briar.
Nevertheless, the second platoon
does have a contest with Sweet
Briar's "JV", scheduled for
Wednesday, at 3:00. A later-season
game at Roanoke is currently on
tap.

The "A" team has four games
remaining: two of them are part of
the prestigious Blue Ridge Field
Hockey Association Tournament,
November 5 and November 6. Each
of the two postponed games is
currently in the re-scheduling stage.

Including mostly undergraduate
women at the University, the Field
Hockey Club has recruited some
more experienced players in the
form of graduate students, nursing
students, staff members and faculty
and student wives for the current
season. Mentor for this motley
group is VI Clark, a graduate
student in Physical Education.
