Irish Drop In Poll

News makers this week in the
race for the unofficial roses in
collegiate football have to be Notre
Dame's fightless Irish who went
down at the hands of Southern Cal
to drop from sixth to 11th in this
week's polling of coaches.

Nebraska's Cornhuskers still
lead Big Eight rival Oklahoma by a
relatively slim margin to head the
list with Michigan, Alabama, and
Auburn still stacked up behind.
Undefeated Georgia and Penn State
each moved up one notch to fill in
ND's void with Arkansas jumping
ahead one baby step.

Another Big Eight school,
Colorado, also merits mention as
the Buffaloes leaped past Ohio
State, a team it had previously
beaten, and Stanford, victims of
Washington State, to the number
nine post. The Buckeyes round out
the top ten.

Notre Dame, 5-1, heads the
second "eight" with Louisiana State
up one to 12th. Undefeated
Toledo, now riding a 30-game win
streak in the Mid-America
Conference, reappears in the poll at
13th. Tennessee is 14th followed
by Arizona State, Florida State,
returning Texas, and the Falcons of
Air Force tamed only by Penn
State.

Only eighteen squads warranted
mention from the mentors this
week.
