Tar Heels Squeak By Wake Forest,
Other Conference Teams Lose

North Carolina strengthened its
hold on the top spot in the ACC
Saturday with a 7-3 win over Wake
Forest at Chapel Hill, and was the
only ACC team to win a football
game in weekend play, as the
conference's other five teams lost
to non-conference opponents.

North Carolina, undefeated in
three conference outings, barely
managed to sneak by the Deacons,
as Wake Forest missed a first down
by inches in the final ten seconds
on the Tar Heel five yard-line in
the regionally televised game.

Carolina scored early in the
first period on an eight-yard run
by Ted Leverenz and then
watched its defense stop the
Deacons in the rest of the game.
Wake's only score came in the
opening period when a 40-yard
field goal try by Chuck Ramsey
hit the cross-bar and bounced
over.

Larry Hopkins carried 34 times
for 143 yards to be the offensive
star of the game for Wake Forest,
but the fullback could never cross
the goal line.

The loss was the second for the
Deacons in conference play.

North Carolina State, next
week's Cavalier opponent,
dropped a 31-15 decision to East
Carolina of the Southern
Conference. Les Stryhorn scored
twice to lead ECU which had won
only one game prior to Saturday.

Willy Burden scored twice for
the Wolfpack, but the Pirates
dominated the game as they rolled
up 345 yards of total offense
to 127 for N.C. State.

Duke, ranked 19th in the
Associated Press poll, was stunned
by Navy, whose only previous win
was against the Cavaliers.

A three-yard pass with just 29
seconds left gave the Midshipmen
their final score, as Fred Sutvek
hit Andy Pease in the end zone.

Ernie Jackson played almost
the whole game on offense and
defense for the Blue Devils, and
had an 83-yard run to set up one
score, and a seventeen yarder for
the score that put Duke ahead
14-0 in the third period. Duke
gave up four fumbles and three
interceptions in the contest.

Pease scored both of Navy's
TDs and also snared a pass from
Stuvek for the Navy two-point
conversion after their first score.

Clemson, tied with UNC for
the conference lead, fell to
fifth-ranked Auburn 35-13.
Linebacker Mike Flynn scored one
touchdown on a fumble recovery
and set up another with an
interception to lead Auburn.

Clemson intercepted Auburn
quarterback Pat Sullivan three
times, but the Auburn star
managed a 55-yard scoring bomb
to Terry Beasley and a 51-yarder
to Dick Schmaltz to set up scores.

Maryland gave Florida a scare
in their homecoming game before
falling 27-23. The Terps led in the
fourth period before a ten-yard
pass from John Reaves to Tom
Durrance gave the Gators the
winning score.

Reaves threw four touchdown
passes to lead Florida, while
Maryland quarterback Al Neville
threw two. Kambiz Behbahani
kicked three field goals for the
Terps who are now 1-6 overall.
