Runners Drop Meet
To UNC, NC State

The Cavalier cross-country
squad opened its season last Friday
in the rain and wind of Hurricane
Ginger as North Carolina topped
the team 18-45 and N.C. State
sloshed its way to a close 25-30 win
in a three-way meet.

There were up to two feet of
rain on the course in Chapel Hill,
N.C. as a result of the hurricane
which caused slower than average
times over the course.

The rain was so heavy that one
Cavalier runner, Mike Decamps,
slipped at one point and lost his
glasses in a two-feet deep mud
puddle. He was forced to stop and
find them, and the delay caused
him to drop in the standings.

Another Cavalier, Mike Pace,
lost time when he also slipped in
the deep water.

Phil Meyer led the Cavalier
runners across the finish line with a
time of 26:46.1 for the five mile
course. Following him were Brew
Barron, Pace, Jerry Hart, and Greg
Lane.

Greg McCaffey and Harry
Widgeon, both of North Carolina,
won the meet as they crossed the
finish line together in 25:50.

Virginia coach Lou Onesty said
he "felt it would have been closer
on a dryer day. I think we will be a
contender in the conference
championship, although there are
some real tough teams. The boys
feel like they can move up. I'm real
proud of how they did."
