Runners Open Year
Against State, UNC

By HUGH CARTER

The University Cross Country
team opens its 1971 season today
at Chapel Hill, North Carolina,
featuring a veteran squad with all
but two runners returning from last
year's team.

The opposition looks to be
tough as the thinclads face UNC, one
of the top ten teams in the country,
and N.C. State, always an ACC
contender in distance running.

Phil Meyer, a third-yearman,
and Co-Captain Brew Barron lead
the Cavalier hopefuls in their debut.
Second-yearman Mike Pace,
forth-yearman Jerry Hart, and
newcomer Gorden Littig appear to
be the best bets to score well for
the Virginia side.

Carolina features a 3:58 miler in
Reggie McAffee, and two fine
all-conference performers. Larry
Widgeon and Tony Waldrop. The
Wolfpack is led by All-American
miler Jim Wilkens.

Virginia success hinges on the
runners good conditioning and race
experience. The meet will be run
over the Tarheels' championship
course, where the Atlantic Coast
Conference Cross Country race was
held last year.

Greg Lane, a miler in the spring,
and the other Co-Captain. Mike
Decamps, have looked good in
practice and could figure in the
Cavalier scoring.

DeCamps, speaking on the
Virginia prospects in the meet, said,
"It will be tough to beat UNC as
they are a nationally ranked team
but we hope to beat N.C. State
down the line."

Commenting on the Cavalier's
prospects for the upcoming Cross
Country year, Coach Lou Onesty
stated. "This is definitely the
strongest team we have had in the
last six or eight years, but a very
tough schedule may leave us with a
mediocre record. Our boys are in
top shape and are running well, as
evidenced by the fact that we had
seven runners break the ten-minute
mark in two-mile workouts last
week."
