Stickmen Gained ACC Title With 9-8 Win Over Terps

The Cavalier tennis team tuned
up for this weekend's ACC
tournament by whitewashing
Hampden-Sydney, 9-0 yesterday in
the season's final dual meet.

Only two matches went more
than two sets, as the Tigers were
simply outclassed by the Cavaliers,
who leave this morning for
Columbia, S.C., where the
conference championship will be
decided starting Thursday.

Doug Waterman, the second
Cavalier player, was the only
Virginia player to drop a singles set,
as he fell behind the Tigers' Charlie
Gant, 8-6, before roaring back to
win the next two sets, 6-2, 6-3.

Podesta Triumphs

Jeff Podesta topped Fred Bruner
in the number one singles match,
6-3, 6-4, and third-rated Bob Kain
had an easy time, romping over
Buck Wiltshire, 6-0, 6-1.

Rick Swift withstood some
tough competition and a long first
set to top Hampden-Sydney's
Sandy Graham in the fourth singles, 10-8, 6-4, before the Cavaliers
easily won the final two singles
matches. Jim Ratliff beat Walker
Sydnor 6-0, 6-1, and Herb Beskin
trounced Francis Nance, 6-2, 6-0.

In the doubles, Kain and
Podesta easily disposed of Bruner,
and Gant, 6-3, 6-4, in the first
match, and Ratliff and Swift took
care of Wiltshire and Swift by the
same score.

The third doubles match went
three sets before the Tiger team of
Graham and Tom Shelton fell to
Cavaliers Jim Blair and Steve
Hatten, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Hatten, a
fourth-year man who has been on
the team for three years, played for
the first time ever, finishing his
career with an undefeated mark.

According to Coach Gordon
Burris, the Cavaliers will be fighting
for third place in the ACC
tournament with Maryland and Wake
Forest. Clemson and North
Carolina are expected to fight it out
for the title.

Mr. Burris says that the hot
South Carolina weather and the
hard-surfaced courts are the biggest
obstacles for the team. He also
noted that the team has no highly
seeded players in any position. The
tournament will start Thursday,
with the conclusion coming on
Saturday.
