Golfers Compile 9-1 Record

Currently carrying a fine 9-1
ledger, the Virginia golf team sends
seven of its members to Rockville,
Maryland, this weekend to take on
the best duffers in the ACC in the
final 36 holes of the ACC tourney.

Britt Stenson, a third yearman,
ranks in a dead heat for fourth after
the first 36 holes, which were
held recently. Leading the field is
Wake Forest's Mike Kallam,
shooting at a 140 pace so far. Bill
Mallon (Duke) holds the second
spot with Lanny Wadkins (Wake,
current U.S. Amateur champ) one
shot up on Stenson's 144.

No other Virginians are in the
top 28 right yet, but Coach Jim
Stephens hopes that maybe another
Cavalier can give Stenson some
company in the front charges. Phil
Crane (3), Bob Dunn (4), Mike
Mozur (2), King Ochmig (2), and
Rick Miller (3) are the other front
running golfers.

Last time out the Virginians
outclassed lowly Randolph-Macon
and Old Dominion in a triangular
meet. Against Randolph-Macon the
Cavaliers prevailed convincingly,
17½ — 3½. The Monarchs from OD
fell by an 17-1 mark.

Highlighting the success of the
team so far have been two big wins.
Virginia came out on top in a
triangular meet with VPI and VMI,
even though the Hokies from Tech
had been State champs the past
seven years. A victory over the
United States Naval Academy also
ranks high on the list of Virginia
successes.

Other bright spots have included
a triumph in a quadrangular meet.
The opposition included University
of Richmond, William and Mary,
and Virginia Commonwealth
University. A third place finish
greeted the golfers at the Maryland
Spring Classic.

After this weekend the duffers
have one more match on their
schedule. May 14 they travel to
Roanoke to tangle with a squad
from Washington and Lee
University.
