Tennis Squad Rallies To Tie Terps

By Bill Nachman

Rallying in the doubles
competition, the varsity netters
came from behind to tie Maryland,
4-4, Monday afternoon in College
Park. The match, which was called
after almost five hours due to
darkness, was the first tie Gordon
Burris has witnessed in his four year
stay at the helm of the varsity
netmen.

Dropping four of six singles
matches, the racketeers grabbed
both doubles to rebound for a tie.
Maryland's Gene Speni whipped
Jeff Podesta in the number one
slot, 8-6, 4-6, 8-6. Terp Neal
Patterson got the better of Doug
Waterman with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph.
Bob Kain, at the number three
position, notched Virginia's first
point with a 6-8, 10-8, 6-3 win over
Gary Silverman.

First-year men Rick Swift and
Jim Ratliff were bested in the
fourth and fifth spots. Swift fell to
Andy Cohen by a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3
count, while Ratliff succumbed to
Jim Wesner 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. Virginia's
second singles win came in the six
position, as third yearman Herb
Beskin turned back the challenge of
Howard Unger.

Virginia started to roll after
Beskin's win in the last singles
match. The Cavaliers' first team of
doubles players (Podesta and Kain)
weathered a three match showing
with Cohen and Unger to walk off
the courts with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win.
Swift and Ratliff then combined to
withstand the play of Patterson and
Silverman, 3-6, 6-3, 10-8.

Excitement than began as the
final doubles match began with
Terrapins Wesner and John Beck
tangling with Frank Spratlin and
Dick Kaspers. After an hour and a
half of play the first set ended in a
16-14 advantage. But due to
darkness the match was terminated
and declared a draw.

Monday's tie boosts the
tennis ledger to a respectable 8-2-1.
This afternoon the netters hope to
improve on this against UNC at
Chapel Hill. According to Coach
Burris this could prove to be quite
difficult as he says they are
"somewhat out of our league."

the Lady Astor Courts Saturday for
a conference match. Upcoming are
W&L, Duke, VPI, and George
Washington.
