Alumni Set For Annual Match

By Tom Bell
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Eighty-nine former Cavalier
football players are set to return for
Saturday's 19th annual
Varsity-Alumni Game at Scott
Stadium, and, according to alumni
coach Bob (Rock) Weir, the total is
climbing so fast that they may run
out of jersey numbers before the 2
p.m. kickoff Saturday.

While alumni turnouts at other
schools hosting similar games fade,
the Cavalier crop seems to become
bigger and more formidable every
year.

Twenty-two fourth year-men,
and a large crop from the 1969
team, will form the nucleus of the
Alumni squad, which will be
coached by Mr. Weir, pros Bob
Kowalkowski and Jim Copeland
and long-time assistants Ed Henry
and Charlie Ellis.

Captain Dan Ryczek and Paul
Reid lead the senior contingent
along with Bob Bischoff, Ed Kihm,
Randy Lestyk, Jim Shannon, and a
host of others.

1969 captains Bob Rannigan
and Rick Moschel are expected,
along with Pete Schmidt, Bob Page,
Tom Patton, and others.

Other top performers from
recent years include Frank Quayle,
Greg Shelley, Jeff Calamos, Bob
Paczkoski, John Pincavage, Jeff
Calamos, Roger Davis, and probable
starting quarterback Tom Hodges.

From out of the Wahoo past
come such former starts Reece
Whitley, Freddie Shepherd, and, of
course, Buddy Shoaf, who has
played in every Spring Game since
the first one in 1953 and shows no
signs of letting up.

This team promises to be every
bit as tough as last year's, according
to Mr. Weir. Last year the old grads
gave the Varsity a good battle
before losing 35-21. An upset win is
always possible as the Alumni
proved in their last win, a 27-19
triumph in 1969.
