Fencers Foil
Appalachian

Special To The Cavalier Daily

Closing out its regular season on
a happy note was the fate last
Saturday of the Virginia Fencing
Team, as it downed visiting
Appalachian State, 15-12.

Pacing the Cavalier effort was a
fine showing by the epeists. Brian
Coupe, winner in three bouts, led
the charge, followed by two wins
each from Jack Coffer and Bill
Adams.

Virginia's top foilist Steve
Hatten, who placed 21st last week
at the NCAA Nationals in
Colorado, was unable to compete.
Therefore, epeist Dave Seroskie
filled in. Though usually an epeist
(25th in the country at last week's
meet). Seroskie turned in a showing
good enough for third place.

Two wins (by Charley Hurt and
Greg Timberlake) in the sabre
division sewed up the victory for
the homestanding Virginians. Other
points came from Nathan Schenker
(two wins) and William Burr (one
win) in the epee class.

Having concluded another
campaign, the fencers already have
their sights set on next year. After
spring break a training clinic will be
run. Memorial Gym will be the
scene for the sessions. Monday
through Wednesday nights 7-9 p.m.,
and Thursday afternoon 5-7 p.m.
