Frosh, Blue Imps To Vie

Virginia's basketball
Cavayearlings begin the final
phase of their season tomorrow
night with a game in Durham
against Duke's Blue Imps, a
team that defeated them in
early season U Hall action,
63-57. The Duke game is the
first in a series of three ACC
contests that preface the end
of the first year season.

The Cavayearlings seem to
be suffering from much the
same malady that gripped last
year's Wahoo football team,
inability to win in the ACC.
Virginia boasts a fine 9-1 overall
record but the tougher competition
offered by the ACC squads leaves
them with only an 0-3 conference
mark.

Since that initial Duke game, the
first of the season for the
Cavayearlings, the team has made
excellent progress and in their last
game thumped Richmond 82-63 on
a blistering second half rally. One
game earlier they gave Maryland's
very highly regarded Baby Terps a
challenge before losing 85-72.

One of the key men in the
Virginia surge has been pivotman
Lanny Stahurski. Lanny, at last
shooting from the outside and
going to the boards aggressively, has
managed to take some of the
burden off Bob McCurdy, the
team's leading scorer and
rebounder. McCurdy has responded
by playing his best defense of the
season in recent games.

Bob McKeag may return to the
starting five if his ankle injury
permits and Al Drummond, Steve
Morris and Keith Sudduth will split
time at guard. Steve Boettner, a 15
point scorer against Richmond, is
the top front court reserve.

The Blue Imps will have the
advantage in height over Virginia
with a front line of Sam May, Chris
Redding and Dave lmer that
averages 6-8. Backcourtmen Jeff
Burdette and Zeno Edwards are
both on the small side
