Matmen Dumped North Carolina 38-10 Friday

Six Cavaliers Scored Pins In Easy Victory Over Tar Heels

Virginia's wrestlers continued to
improve last weekend as they
trounced North Carolina 38-10,
winning six matches on pins.

Strength in the lower weight
classes gave the Cavaliers an
insurmountable early lead and
allowed them to coast to victory
although losing two matches by
pins.

The matmen took a 28-0 lead
before suffering their first loss in the
troublesome 167-pound division, as
they scored pins in all but one of
the first six matches. The other was
an easy 15-9 win for 126-pounder
Jack Johndrow.

Jim Holland started the rout
with a pin in the second period of
his opening 118-pound match.
After Johndrow's decision.
134-pounder Lou Pavia.
142-pounder Don Drew.
150-pounder John Pegues, and
158-pounder Denis Bittenbender
scored pins, the last coming during
the opening two-minute period.

Benton Speece, wrestling his
first varsity match at 167, and Bill
Farrell, wrestling for the first time
all season, were the only two losers
for the Cavaliers as both were
pinned by Tar Heels.

Kevin Michaels ran his dual meet
record to 11-1 with a pin at 190 for
the final Cavalier victory.
Co-captain Ted Moore won a forfeit
victory at 177.

The win ran the Cavalier dual
meet record to 7-5 and evened their
ACC mark at 1-1.
