Lanny Leads Cavayearlings

By John Markon

There was no "Stick
Hampden-Sydney Right In The
Kidney" sign in the U Half rafters
Saturday afternoon but Virginia's
basketball Cavayearlings somehow
got the message anyway and blew
the undersized Tigers off the court,
102-65.

Dressing only eight men, one of
them taller than 6-4, the Tigers
gamely held Virginia to only a
49-38 halftime advantage but fell
before the Cavayearlings'
customary second half onslaught
and were outscored 53-27 after
intermission. The Virginia frosh,
now very accustomed to dealing
with a five guard offense, forced
Hampden-Sydney to shoot from far
outside with the result being only
35 per cent marksmanship by the
Tigers.

Virginia shot 53 per cent and
was led, surprisingly enough, by big
Lanny Stahurski, heretofore a
slumbering giant. Stationing himself
under the boards and waiting for a
pass or a missed shot Stahurski
shot ten of thirteen field goals and
grabbed twenty-one rebounds.

Bob McCurdy, getting his
credentials in order for next year,
was game high with 25 points,
mostly on baseline one-handers,
and snared 12 rebounds and
blocked at least five shots.
Teammate Bob McKeag, despite
spending time in the backcourt,
matched McCurdy's rebounds total
and doled out eight assists. He
scored eleven points.

The reason McKeag saw guard
duty was regular back courtman
Steve Morris' case of the flu. This
and the departure from the team of
Billy Maxwell has left the
Cavayearlings kind of hard up in
the guards department. "Real"
guards Al Drummond and Keith
Suddith both played very well,
scoring 16 and 17 points
respectively.

The Cavayearlings, now 8-3,
next tackle the Maryland Baby
Terps, a team that will field four
starters taller than
Hampden-Sydney's center. The
Baby Terps feature prep starts Mark
Cartwright, Jam Trimble, Rich
Porac and a 6-11 center from
Pennsylvania. The game will be
played here on Wednesday evening
at 5:55.
