Cavayearlings Bow, 63-57
By John Mark on
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
A fired-up Cavayearling
basketball team roared on to the
court after halftime anxious for
atonement but found their
multitude of first half sins too
much to overcome as they dropped
a 63-57 decision to Duke's Blue
Imps Saturday night.
The Imps, 16-0 last year,
advanced to a quick 11-2 lead and
were ahead by 38-26 at halftime.
Their large height advantage,
provided by 6-10 Dave Elmer and
6-8 Chris Redding, often allowed
them to shoot two-footers until
either a foul or out of bounds
stopped play. Only the good floor
games of guards Steve and Morris
and Al Drummond kept Virginia in
the game.
Coach Dick DiBiaso gave the
Cavayearlings "the word" at
halftime and the first twelve points
of the second period were scored
by Virginia. A basket by Bob
McCurdy tied the score at 38-38
and a later score by Bob McKeag
knotted the game at 42-42.
Drummond and McKeag later
worked themselves into foul
trouble and accurate and frequent
free throw shooting by the Imps
was the only difference in the final
minutes.
Steve Morris led Virginia in
scoring with 17 points while
McKeag tallied 14.
