Riders Stomp Penn
To Remain Unbeaten

By Mark Pirrung
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

The University polo team
delivered a trouncing defeat to the
University of Pennsylvania polo
club last Sunday in a 13-2 game at
the Farmington arena.

With sunny skies prevailing and
spirits up the Virginia team rode
into the arena with confidence and
strong will. Ray Norden played
back for the University and held
the Pennsylvania riders scoreless in
the first half.

Norden drove home two scores
in the first chukka and Reid
Graham scored once. By the half
Virginia had gained a substantial
5-0 lead.

Losing spirit and desire the
Pennsylvania defense fell apart in
the second half and the Wahoo
riders burned down the field for
another eight scores.

Scoring for Penn were Willie
McCormick and Tom O'Connor,
but they could not approach a
respectable control of the ball and
fell further into Virginia's mercy.

The Pennsylvania players
seemed to lack team understanding
and played as individuals.

The match gave the University a
6-0 record for the fall season. No
team has been able to mount a
united opposition and have fallen
mostly to two figure Virginia
scores.

The first serious threat to the
team's record may come this
Sunday when the squad takes on
the Yale players. The Openings
game will be the last game of the
fall season and probably the most
exciting.

Playing for Yale, the
intercollegiate champions for the
last five years will be Allen Harris
rated at three goals, Reid
Openheimer rated one, and Jim
Vlassic a one goal player.

This is the first five goal team
the University has faced for two
years and promises to be a tough
one to beat. Allen Harris and Reid
Openheimer teamed up with Bill
Brown last year to win the
Intercollegiate at Darien when
Virginia was knocked out in the
first round.

The game will be at 2:30 at the
Farmington Hunt Club.
