Harriers Outdistance Keydets

By Mike DeCamps
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Beset with injuries to two of
their best runners, the Cavalier
harriers had to rely on their depth
to salvage a victory against VMI
Friday afternoon. The Virginia
squad took the meet 24-32, but had
to do it without number one man
Phil Meyer and number three man
Mike Pace.

The remainder of the Cavaliers'
top seven runners took up the
slack, running hard in the middle of
the race and pushing most of the
Keydet top five back into a pack
behind the Virginia harriers.
Virginia had four of the top five
places which accounted mainly for
the victory.

Brew Barron, moved into the
number one slot with Meyer gone,
and came from behind after a
relatively slow first mile to win in
28:01. The lone Keydet in the top
five, Gus Elliott slipped in behind
Barron in 28:10, but then the
Cavalier pack came in.

Jim Wood, Frank Andrew, and
Joe Cacciapaglia took third through
fifth respectively and left five VMI
runners behind them. The three
Virginia runners were grouped
within ten seconds of each other.

The rugged five mile Cavalier
course proved to be too much wear
and tear on the Keydet thinclads as
they started well, but could not
keep pace after three miles.
Cacciapaglia went by three Keydets
in the last mile, and the victory was
sewed up.

Now the Cavaliers must face Old
Dominion in Norfolk Friday, a
team VMI has already beaten. A
victory will make the dual meet
record a final 3-4.

The state meet this year is in
Williamsburg. Friday, November 6.
The Cavaliers will be pointing for
revenge over Virginia Tech who
defeated them earlier.
