Booters Edge Blue Devils

The Virginia soccer team closed
out its home schedule on a high
note last Friday by defeating Duke,
2-1, thereby snapping a two-game
losing streak and gaining an
Atlantic Coast Conference win.

Although it was refreshing to see
the team win after its consecutive
losses to Maryland and
Randolph-Macon, the Cavalier
offense has not shown any sign of
its early season spark in quite a
while.

Against the Blue Devils, Virginia
took 43 shots and kept goalie Dave
Woodyard extremely busy. The
Duke netman was credited with 23
saves and would have had a very
difficult day had the Cavalier line
been sharper with its passing.

All of the game's scoring came
in the third quarter. The dominant
Virginia offense finally scored 5
minutes and 15 seconds into the
period when Andy DuPont made
good on a rebound shot.

With 10 minutes left in the
quarter, Duke's Craig Tymeson
booted one past Cavalier goaltender
Alex Boniewiez, who was credited
with six saves during the game.

Substitute Geoff Curme drilled
in Virginia's winning goal six
minutes after the Duke tally and
only 20 seconds after his entrance
into action.

The victory boosted the
Cavaliers' record ACC mark to 2-1
and the booters go into this
afternoon's game with VPI sporting
a 4-2-1 record overall.
