When Dining Out
In Charlottesville

By Jeff Ruggles
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

For the disintegrating connoisseur,
Charlottesville offers a
variety of restaurants and other
eating establishments, with a wide
range of prices and accessibility.

First year students will have
already discovered the Glass Hat
and the Castle, Convenience is
their forte, and they have an
atmosphere which is theirs alone.
The Cavalier Daily Scheming Eye
Committee recommends omelets
at the Hat and egg sandwiches at
the Castle.

Newcomb Hall houses three
emporia: the Grill, an overgrown
Hat or Castle which also sells beer;
the Open Square, a cafeteria where
one can get a lot for the money;
and the Contract Cafeteria. The
contract is where Mother would
want you to eat; if you are considering
purchasing a meal ticket,
try eating at the Open Square for a
few days in a row to get a sense of
what a semester or two in the
Contract would be like.

The Corner offers a plethora of
eating establishments. Two deserve
special note: the White Spot,
famous for Gusburgers, and the
University Diner, where one can get
one-eyed bacon cheeseburgers and
grills with. Notice also Poe's, which
is opening this year for the first
time.

Underneath the auditorium in
Old Cabell Hall is the Cave, a good
place for coffee, donuts, and a few
minutes to read The Cavalier Daily.

If one has access to a car, there
are many more places to go. One
can head towards downtown
Charlottesville on Main Street and
run into The Gaslight, Sip'n'Sizzle,
or hamburger joints, restaurants,
and snack bars.

Swooping out Route 29 will
reveal many more places, such as
Lups's, The Angus Barn, Ken
Johnson Cafeteria, and too many
more to mention. Any other road
will have its own set of establishments.

If you have "Time to Kill", you
might be interested in some of the
places which are a little farther
away from the University. Of
course, you could eat at the Boars
Head Inn, and there are reports of a
new place on Route 250 East on
Pantops Mountain, the Spectrum
East, which features bands.

There are also many fine inns
and taverns in the surrounding
country, so if you tire of the local
tread, a short scenic drive will open
new culinary horizons for you.
