Montreal Snares 1976 Olympics

MONTREAL - For
Montrealers, today's
announcement that this
metropolis had been awarded
the 1976 Summer Olympics
couldn't have come at a better
time.

The city was bathed in the
brilliant sunshine; 3-0 victory
by the Expos over the
world-champion New York
Mets was still the talk of the
town, and after the stunning
success of Expo 67 three years
ago, the time was long overdue
for a new spectacular
achievement by Mayor Jean
Drapeau.

Following the decisive
rejection of the Quebec
separatists in the recent
provincial elections, Montreal
was ready to resume its
symbolic role of promoting a
healthy, bicultural
Canadianism and the city's
image in the international
community.

There had been weeks of
speculation that the big fight
for the Summer Olympics was
between Moscow and Los
Angeles, with Montreal almost
ignored by the experts with
access to "reliable sources" in
the International Olympic
Committee's inner sanctum.
