Eight Netters Win
In ACC Tournament

By Tom Bell
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Virginia got off to its best
start ever in the ACC Tennis
Tournament at Chapel Hill,
N.C., yesterday as the Cavaliers
won eight out of nine first
round matches.

The good start leaves the
team tied for first place in the
tournament with favorites
Clemson and North Carolina
who also won eight of nine
first round duels.

Number one John Winter
was the only casualty for the
Cavaliers as he dropped his
match to Wake Forest's Jim
Hasian, 6-4, 6-3.

Andy Scheinman pulled a
slight upset in the number two
tourney as the fifth-seeded
Scheinman topped
fourth-seeded Steve McCarthy
of South Carolina, who had
beaten him in the regular
season. Scheinman dropped the
first set, but came back to win
in three, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Biff Cooper, fourth seeded
in the number three
tournament, had, to go three
sets to top Ken West of Wake
Forest, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.

Virginia's last three singles
players had easy times in
taking first round opponents.
All three are seeded third. Jeff
Podesta won 6-1, 6-0 over N.C.
State's Dee. Blankenbour, Bob
Kain beat Duke's John Lerch
6-3, 6-1, and Bob Waterman
beat State's Kirk McKim, 6-4,
6-3.

All three doubles teams
won in straight sets.

Virginia's real test comes
today as six of the first round
winners face North Carolina
opponents, and the remaining
two take on Clemson players.
