Crew Teams Compete For DC Area
Championship, Rough Water Ahead

Coming off a surprising
second place finish last
weekend in the Southern
Intercollegiate Rowing
championships, Virginia's
crews travel to Washington this
Saturday for the District of
Columbia area championships.

Only beaten twice so far
this season, the varsity eight
will compete against
Georgetown University, George
Washington and Howard on the
2,000 meter Potomac River
course near the Francis Scott
Key Bridge. Earlier this spring
the Cavalier oarsmen swept
past Drexel in the Easters'
Regatta, the weekend after this
same Drexel shell had beaten
both GW and Howard in the
Grimaldi Cup races.

Georgetown is another
story. Having won the Dad Vail
Regatta for the past two years
they will be the toughest
competition of the year.
Virginia went to the D.C.
Championships last year also,
with Georgetown taking the
title.

The freshmen eight has
been the only Virginia crew to
have competed against these
teams. Undefeated this year,
and the champion last week in
the SIRA's, the first year crew
won the Cherry Blossom
Festival Regatta against these
D.C. area shells.

Friday and Saturday of
next weekend the Cavaliers
travel to Philadelphia for the
Dad Vail Small College Rowing
Championships. Of the 36
teams that competed last year
the Virginians placed seventh.
