Golfers Second In Tourney

"We played about our capacity,"
commented golf coach
Butch Slaughter yesterday afternoon
on the Cavaliers'
second place finish in the state
golf tournament Monday.
Beaten by Virginia Tech with a
team score of 598, Virginia
compiled 625 strokes to edge
out William & Mary, which
scored 635, Lynchburg, and
Randolph-Macon and nine
other colleges.

Gobbler John Osborne turned in
the top individual performance as
he shot a 77-70, 147 over the
par-72, 6,800 yard Lower Cascades
course in Hot Springs, Virginia.

Virginia's Paul Samanchik
wound up third in the individual
scoring as he shot a 77-74, 151.
Other Cavaliers to place were:
Bubba Victor at 74-83-157; King
Ochmig at 80-75, 155; Britt Stenson
at 90-72, 162; Jay Jennison at
83-82, 165; and Dave Barrickman
at 85-82, 165. Dave Gardner, a
freshman who was not eligible to
compete on the team because of a
six man limit, shot a good 79-82,
161.

Osborne, on scholarship like his
Hokie teammates, credited determination
to succeed and "lots and
lots of blisters" for his success on
the links. He incorporated five
bridles on his second round 70,
including a sensational back nine in
which he recorded six pars and
three birdies that came consecutively
on the 15th, 16th, and 17th
holes. He one-putted from about
four feet on each of the birdies.
