Buffalo Of NBA Drafts
Case As Third Choice
by Randy Wert
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
It was announced early this
morning that Chip Case, sharpshooting
Virginia forward and team
captain, has been drafted by the
new Buffalo franchise of the
National Basketball Association.
Taken in the third round of the
annual marathon talent grab-bag,
Case stated that he was "just happy
to have the opportunity to play pro
ball."
The smooth-as-silk 6-3 fourth
year-man lives only 18 miles from
Buffalo in Lockport, N.Y., and
added that "it will be sort of a
homecoming for me." Case said
that Eddie Donovan, former general
manager of the New York Knickerbockers,
who resigned to take a
similar position with the new
Buffalo club, had contacted him
several times during the season,
therefore the news of the pick was
not a complete surprise. Buffalo
chose 6-8 John Hummer, All-Ivy
League forward from Princeton and
Alexandria, Virginia, in the first
round and traded their second pick,
making Case their number two
choice, Case admitted that he was
"surprised" that he went that high
in the draft, but that he really
wanted' to take a crack at the pros
somewhere.
Case will attend rookie camp
sometime in June to try to win a
place on the roster. The announcement
came soon after the
Portsmouth Invitational Tournament
in which a team led by Case,
averaging nearly 30 points a game.
Gordon Stiles of American University,
former Cavalier cager Mike
Wilkes, and several players from
Furman, made it to the finals only
to be defeated by a team including
South Carolina's Bobby Cremins,
UNC's Van Williford, and Joe
Collins, Yankee Conference Most
Valuable Player from Rhode Island.
The new franchises in the NBA
include Portland, Oregon and Cleveland,
Ohio. Plans for a team in
Houston were dropped recently.
Chip has been working on the
rehabilitation weight program for
his weak knee and is "not going to
worry about it any more than I did
for this season."
