IM Roundup
Fraternities; Some Sink
Qualifying heats for the High
Point swimming competition were
held Monday evening in the Memorial
Gym tank. The five fastest
times in each of the four events
advanced to the championship
meet.
In the 50 yard butterfly, Rich
Tuggle of St. Elmo's was an
unchallenged first in the heats with
a time of 26 seconds. Runner-up
Denny Griffith of Phi Delt was
nearly a second back. An independent,
Harry Patton, and Rich
Maxwell (Phi Delt) were separated
by only two-tenths of a second in
the 50 yard backstroke at 30.0 and
30.2, respectively.
The best 50 yard freestyle time
was by Tat Smith (Beta) at 25.1
with Bill Lewis of St. A's close
behind at 25.2. The Phi Delt 100
yard medley relay team of Denny
and Greg Griffith, Rich Maxwell,
and Bill McClintock set a new IM
record at 51.3 while PiKA with Bill
Lockwood, Bruce Broecher, Ernest
Dempsey and Chris Moore finished
second at 52.7. There were approximately
150 competitors involved
with another qualifying meet tonight
for the 150 freestyle, the 50
yard breaststroke, the freestyle
relay, and the diving competitions.
In the championship 'round of
bowling,' SPE will bowl AEPi, and
Chi Phi takes on Pi Kap in the
semi-finals. Defending champ SPE
compiled the highest score in the
quarter finals.
High Point squash has reached
the finals as Dave Turner of St. A's
will play Chip Young of Zete for
the crown.
Weigh-in for the boxing tournament
will be held on Tuesday,
March 17, at 4 p.m. The competition
looks tough as many defending
champs return for this year's single
elimination tournament.
