Pistols Win

The Virginia Pistol Team outshot
VPI to win an Intercollegiate
Sectional Match held Saturday Feb.
28 at the University.

The Match was fired with
22-caliber pistols, and consisted of
a 1200-point match for four-man
teams and a separate 900-point
match for individual shooters. Virginia
team Captain George Duckworth
and team mates Preston
Hewitt, Jeff Stine, and Rick Higgs
fired a total of 1040 to beat Fast
Tennessee's 977 and VPI's 867.

In the Individual match, Virginia's
George Duckworth look first
with 847. Preston Hewitt look
second with 799, with East Tennessee's
Paul Wolford taking
third with 790.

The Sectional was fired using
standard targets at fifty feet for
Slow, Timed, and Rapid ire. Most
of the competitors used HiStandard
22 caliber semi-automatic
pistols, though at least one each of
Colt, Smith & Wesson, and Roger
target pistols were seen.

The Pistol Sectional was the
first of its kind held at Virginia, and
represented months of practice by
the Cavalier Team.
