Virginia Fencers Defeat W&M
Avenging an early season loss to
William and Mary The University of
Virginia Fencing Club defeated
them Saturday before a large crowd
in Williamsburg. The victory gave
Virginia its second consecutive Midwinters
Cup Title.
As this was a dual meet, only
one fencing strip was used and the
competition was held in three
rounds. Each round consisted of
three foil, three epee, and three
sabre bouts. Virginia took the lead
after the first round 5 to 4, and
increased its lead to 12 to 6 after
two rounds. As at least 14 points
are needed for victory, Virginia was
looking for two more points going
into the third round. First year
foilist Will Burr broke a 4-4 tie bout
to win the first point, and Captain
Steve Hatten assured Virginia of
victory by defeating William and
Mary's number one foilist, Jeff
Byers. The final score was 15 to 12
as Virginia substituted freely after
victory was guaranteed.
The foil team won 6 to 3.
Captain Steve Hatten kept his winning
streak alive with three victories.
Burr contributed two wins,
and converted Brian Coupe
had one victory. The foil team
fenced without the services of its
former number two man, Fred Verhaak
who left school this semester.
The epee team also won by the
score of 5 to 4. Number one
Bill Adams had three wins with
Jack Cofer and Dave Seroskle contributing
one victory each. The
sabre team lost 5 to 4 largely as a
result of the substitutions they
made after the victory was assured.
Both Evan Robinson and Roy Ritzman
had two victories.
The fencing team upped its overall
record to 3-4 while its conference
record of 1-2 remained unchanged.
Next Saturday the team
will travel to College Park to fence
Maryland the Baltimore Fencing
Club. The team will fence conference
foes VMI, UNC, and N.C.
State March 6 and 7 at Memorial
Gym in Charlottesville. The latter
meet is open to the public and no
admission will be charged.
