W&M Crushes Mermen
Last Saturday, the
University of Virginia Swimming
team dropped its third meet of the
young season to the Indians of
William and Mary. After two losses
on the road to Wake Forest and
Maryland, Coach Ron Good hoped
that his Cavaliers could get back
into the winning column at the
friendly confines of Memorial Pool.
Their efforts, however, were for
nought as the invaders from
Williamsburg had just too much
depth and thus overwhelmed the
hard-working mermen 67-37. Even
though the defeat did not come at
the hands of an Atlantic Coast
Conference opponent, it was still
very disappointing because of the
fact that the Cavaliers so easily
defeated the Indians last year. But
Coach Good said earlier in the year
that this could be a building year,
and now that the swimming record
stands at 1-3, it looks as though he
could be right. However, Virginia
has three more meets with outside
opponents before they return to
ACC competition with Duke and
Clemson. It is hopeful that they can
get back on the winning track that
started with their initial win over
Georgetown. They host Old Dominion
and Catholic University before
Christmas break.
