Sailors Second In
SAISA Sea Chase

Virginia's sailing club placed
second in the fall championship
regatta of the South Atlantic
Intercollegiate Sailing Association
at Clemson's Lake Hartell on the
weekend of November 22nd and
the 23rd. What makes such a feat
remarkable, quasi-spectacular for
that matter, is that the Virginia
Sailing Club does not own a boat.

Practicing only on the day of a
race in borrowed boats, the Cavaliers
placed second overall in a field
of six. Racing in two divisions, The
Citadel finished first, Clemson
third, Old Dominion fourth, South
Carolina fifth, and Davidson a
lackluster last.

Sailing for the Cavaliers in the A
division, featuring 420's, were captain
Mike Bynane and his crew,
James Patton, Penguins raced in the
B division, with Ales Schlegel as
captain and Nurse Carol Carver as
his erstwhile deck hand. Schlegel
won six straight races to capture his
division.

Facing such big time sailing
powers as Davidson many times a
year, the Virginia sailors will
hibernate for the winter, starting to
race again some time in March.
Unlike many of the member teams
of the SAISA. Virginia's sailing
team is not a member of the
University's athletic department,
and depends on donations from
interested members of the University
community and membership
dues for the operating budget. They
are in the process of obtaining their
first boat.
