Once again its happy hour, time
for The Cavalier Daily's panel of
gridistical statistical experts to
forecast the results of this
weekend's big games.
With only one week to go Editor
Bob Cullen is still the head pigskin
procrastinator bu the rest of the
pack is close on his heels.
Architecture student Bill Reese,
using his dear Daddykins' patented
system, is in second place with a
fine 56-27 ledger and former CD
sports editor Ted McKean is two
games back at 55-27. Sportswriter
Dave Marshall, by virtue of first
place finishes the last two weeks,
rounds out the top four with a
54-27 ledger.
Sports editor Hugh Antrim, 14-4
the previous two weeks, heads the
second division at 53-29 while
co-editor Steve Giannini and writer
Gordy Rawles are tied at 53-29.
Alas, bringing up the rear is ye olde
university's Sports Information
Director Barney Cooke, who has
the unshakable habit of picking
ACC teams against outside
competition.
In games picked this week things
look decidedly one sided in the Ivy
League. The Elis of Yale are
favored to stomp Harvard into the
turf and maintain second place
behind Dartmouth. The Indians
from Hanover should also have
little trouble with Princeton. Both
teams are favored 8-0.
Bowl-bound West Virginia pits
its ground machine against
Syracuse's rushing defense in the
battle between the number two and
three eastern independents. The
board split 4-4 on its decision.
In the other games picked upon
by the panel which pertain to the
national ranking there is one slight
shocker. Bill Reese and his system
have Michigan favored by one point
over Ohio State, the number one
college team whose defense is
bettered only by that of the
Minnesota Vikings. In other big
games Southern Cal is favored over
UCLA by 6-2 and Colorado-Kansas
State are even.
In local games South Carolina
should celebrate their bowl bid
with a win over arch-rival Clemson
and Davidson should disappoint the
Tangerine Bowl officials with a loss
to Vandy. Rounding out the picks
Don McCauley should lead the Tar
Heels over Duke and Wake is
expected to fall to Miami of
Florida.
