Win Skein On Line

State, UNC Face Booters

By Eric Tompkins

Coach Gordon Burris' booters
put their unbeaten record on the
line when they face N.C. State
today and U.N.C. tomorrow in
crucial A.C.C. contests. The Cavaliers
are coming off a hard-fought
victory over Randolph-Macon in
their quest for their first A.C.C.
soccer title.

Maryland, North Carolina, and
Virginia are currently tied for the
lead in A.C.C. soccer action, each
team owning a 2-0 conference
record.

The Tarheels, ranked in the top
fifteen in the nation, are 3-1 overall
on the season. Losing only to
Appalachian, U.N.C. is led by two
All-Americans, Brazilian Louis Bush
at forward and Marc Packard at the
fullback position.

N.C. State fields a predominantly
international squad in contrast
to the Cavaliers' home-grown
booters. The Wolfpack is winless in
A.C.C. play and stands at 1-4 on all
games. Encountering defensive
problems, State has given up 22
goals while hitting the nets only
twice.

Looking ahead to the contests
with N.C. State and U.N.C., Coach
Burris stated that the Cavaliers
would have to break into the
scoring column more frequently.
He felt that he could look to the
bench to give his first eleven
occasional breathers if the starters
could find the scoring range.

Burris attributed the squad's
success to "hustle and good defense."
Refusing to single out any
players for outstanding play, he said
that he had gotten "good performances
from everyone." He added
that the second team had won three
games for the Cavaliers which was a
good indication of how the squad
was playing.

Allowing their six opponents
only two goals, the Cavaliers'
defense leads all A.C.C. teams in
that department. With tri-captain
Dan Abramson in the goal and Ed
Marks, Tom Schildwachter and
tri-captain Mike Sorenson at the
fullback positions, Virginia has the
necessary strength to throttle
U.N.C. and N.C. State's offensive
units.

The Cavalier attack has run past
opposing squads this season, averaging
over two scores a game. Led
by high scorer Jay Connor at inside,
the offense is provided with additional
power by inside Steve Kennelly
and wings Fred McGlynn and
Jack Sherry.

Able to control play at the
midfield area, the halfback unit of
Dave Bowman, John Gaughen, and
Jay Zichl has set up the offense
with pinpoint passing all season.

The Cavaliers have finally jelled
inform close-working unit and this
could spell success for them when
they face the Tarheels and the
Wolfpack.
