Well, sports funs, once again its
time for The Cavalier Daily's panel
of intrepid gridiron journalists to
foresee the future of this weekend's
area football games.
Five upsets across the board
devastated last week's percentages
as every participant lost his arse, as
Chaucer might say. Bob Cullen tied
fellow former sports editor Ted
McKean with a 5-4 record to
maintain his grasp on first place
with a 20-7 ledger.
This time around nine games dot
the scorecard with no less than four
rated to better than toss-ups. Fifth
ranked Penn State takes on
seventeenth ranked West Virginia in
the feature attraction. Things look
bad for our neighbors to the west as
the board goes 8-1 in favor of Penn
State with only sports editor Steve
Giannini having the guts to go with
the Mountaineers.
The Prognosticators went 8-1 on
four other games. Sports
Information Director Barney Cooke
stuck to the ACC and went with
UNC over Air Force while sports
writer Gordy Rawles was the sole
person to pick Michigan over ninth
ranked Purdue. McKean was all
alone in picking William and Mary
over the Citadel.
In the feature ACC tilt the
board went 5-3 with N.C. State
picked over South Carolina.
Barney's Wolfpack vote expressed
the fervent Cavalier hope that the
Gamecocks are defeated to give
Virginia a chance to the ACC
crown. In the other ACC game the
panel picked up and down Wake
Forest to knock off winless Duke
by 7-1, as Gino was the only one to
pick Duke.
With Blind faith Virginia Tech
was picked to overcome Kentucky
and snap its three game losing
streak by 5-3. Clemson is not
expected to fair so well against SEC
competition as the gang chose
Auburn by 6-2.
The board could not decide
whether Pitt's 14-12 victory over
Duke was better than Navy's 56-17
pummelling by Texas and split 4-4.
