Farmington Wins
Despite Rally, 5-4

By Robert Byron

In its season debut Sunday the
University of Virginia Polo Team
suffered its first defeat at the hands
of the Farmington Hunt Club, 5-4.

Though undefeated last season,
the Cavalier Squad, composed of
Darryl Banks, Rob Rinehart, and
John Cutler, could not hold off
Farmington's team of Quinton
Crommelin, Jake Carle, and Harry
Robertshaw.

The scoring began in the first
chukkar (period) when Farmington's
Crommelin picked up a pass
from Jake Carle out of the line up
and carried it in for the score. Also
scoring for Farmington in the first
chukkar were Robertshaw and
Carle, while Virginia's tone tally
was by Dave Banks.

In addition to the fact that
Virginia was out mounted in the
first chukkar, Rinehart, Banks, and
Cutler, playing their first game
together as a unit, seemed to have
difficulty in coordinating their
efforts.

The second chukkar was a
scoreless one for both teams as each
squad was mounted evenly and a
defensive struggle ensued.

During the third chukkar. Farmington
once again had the edge in
mounts, but as the Virginia squad
became better acclimated to playing
as a single unit, they held
Farmington to a single goal, scored
by Robertshaw.

In the fourth chukkar, the
mounts were closer to even and the
Cavalier squad got hot and tied the
score with three quick, successive
goals by Rinehart, one on a ten
yard free shot caused by a serious
foul in the goal mouth by Farmington.

With the score tied at 4-4, three
Virginia scoring attempts were
foiled by a combination of bad
breaks and heads-up defensive play
by Farmington.

With thirty seconds remaining in
the final chukkar. Virginia committed
a similar foul to that of
Farmington, which enabled Carle to
score his second goal of the day and
insure the victory for the Farmington
Club, 5-4.

In addition to the fall and spring
polo seasons, David Banks takes on
the role of the mounted Cavalier at
each home football game.

Next Sunday at 2:30, Virginia
hosts a strong Middleburg team led
by Zeke Ferguson of Beaumont
Farm who serves as the Governor of
the Southeastern Polo Circuit.
