Harriers Entertain
Carolina, N.C.State

With six returning lettermen
from the top eight slots last year,
and two outstanding first-year men
this year's edition of the cross
country team will face its sternest
test all season in its first meet this
Saturday over the five mile Virginia
course.

The opposition will be provided
by North Carolina and North
Carolina State, and Virginia's overall
ACC standing will probably be
decided when it is over.

Leading the Cavaliers will be this
year's captain Rick Katz who has
been running in meets all summer
and is in far better shape than he
was at this time last year, and Br
Barron who has shown a great
improvement over last year when
he was number three or four man.

The next two slots will be filled
by first-year men Jerry Hart, an
outstanding two-miler from New
Jersey, and Phil Myer, a middle-distance
runner from Lexington,
Kentucky. The fifth man will either
be Frank Andrew or Craig Garder,
both lettermen last year.

The Carolina squad will bring to
town one of the conference's best
middle distance runners in Kenny
Helms and Virginia's premier high
school miler two years ago, Larry
Widgeon. State, who the Cavaliers
have a good chance of defeating,
has one of the conference's best
distance men, Gareth Hayes, but
past that, no one the Cavalier
runners can't contend with.

The Harriers can look forward
to spending a lot of time this year
working out on their winding rocky
course which later in the season will
be the site of the conference meet.
A number of improvements have
been made with soft dirt being
added in the rough spots, and the
two miles of rugged fields being
plowed over and cut. The meet will
begin at 1:30 Saturday afternoon
across the street from University
Hall.
