Cavayearlings Face Baby Gobblers
Tomorrow, Friday, September
26, the University of Virginia
freshman football team will kick
off its 1969 campaign against the
Gobblers of Virginia Tech in the
American Cancer Society Benefit
Game to be played at 3:30 p.m. at
Scott Stadium. All proceeds from
the ballgame will be turned over to
the American Cancer Society.
Local experts say that the talent
on this year's freshman squad is
among the most impressive Coach
Blackburn has recruited in his
tenure as head football coach at
Virginia. Though making no concrete
predictions, Freshman Coach
Bill Clay said that his boys have
been working hard to get ready for
the big test on Friday and, if the
attitude of the players remains at
its present high level, the young
Wahoos should have a successful
season.
In addition to the Cancer
Society benefit game against Tech,
the Virginia Freshmen have games
scheduled against Maryland at College
Park on October 3, UNC at
Scott Stadium on October 10, VMI
at Lexington on October 31, and
William and Mary at Williamsburg
on November 15.
Despite injuries to several key
players, the first year men are
eagerly looking forward to playing
their first game for the Homecoming
crowd and hope to duplicate
last year's 28-20 victory over
VPI at Blacksburg.

Opening Game Played As Cancer Benefit; Students Get In On I. D. Cards, But Dates Need Tickets
The starting backfield for Friday's
game will be: Bill Troup at
quarterback, Fred Kaspick at halfback,
Terry McGovern at fullback,
and Alan Clements at flanker.
Troup, at 6-4 and 196, starred in
high school at Bethel Park, Pa., and
is rated as a fine passer. Kaspick
played his high school football in
Tyrone, Pa., and was an All-Pennsylvania
pick. A native of
White Plains, N.Y., McGovern
played both offense and defense at
Peddle School, was selected to the
All-Prep team on defense, and has
good size at 6-1 and 210. Flanker
Clements was an Honorable Mention
All-State pick at Kellum High
of Virginia Beach.
The offensive line of the freshman
team also has impressive
credentials. At one guard is Buzzy
Jones, 5-11 and 208, an All-Tidewater
lineman from Norfolk,
Va. Jones is the only non scholarship
athlete to start on the
frosh football team in many years.
At the other guard, Greg Godfrey, a
hometown boy who attended Fork
Union Military, will start Friday at
5-10 and 205. At strong tackle, the
young Wahoos have last year's
Pennsylvania State Heavyweight
Wrestling Champion, Bill Farrell.
Farrell is 6-4 and 230 and played
football for Bethlehem Catholic
High.
On defense, Virginia has two
All-Western Pennsylvania selections
in middle guard Phil Cerpanya of
Pittsburgh and tackle George
Jacoby, also of Pittsburgh. Another
standout is safety Billy League
from Lovingston, Va., and Fork
Union Military. At 6-2 and 214,
tackle Gary Arbeznik was an
All-League selection at St. Ignatius
in Cleveland, Ohio.
It is hoped that University
students, alumni, and townspeople
will provide a large crowd to
support both the Cancer Society
and the first year Cavaliers. Tickets
for tomorrow's contest will be on
sale in advance at University Hall,
Miner's Pipe Shop, and Carriage
Cleaners. General admission adults
will be $1.00; University students
will be admitted by their ID cards.
No matter what the final score,
this is clearly a game where
everyone wins.
