Cross Country Begins Practice,
Opens Against UNC, N.C. State

By Eric Tompkins

Bolstered by a strong group of
first-year runners, Coach Lou
Onesty's cross-country team should
have a good chance of surpassing
last year's 3-4 record and
sixth-place finish in the A.C.C.

As the result of this talent,
Coach Onesty expects his veteran
harriers to be pushed to better
performances this fall. First-year
man Jerry Hart, a 4:24 miler from
the Peddic School, should be one of
the keys to the success of cross
country this year. Other newcomers
with promise include Philip Meyer
of Lexington, Ky., and Jim
Whitenack from Richmond's
Huguenot High.

Captain Rick Katz leads a fine
group of returning lettermen. A
steady, long-winded runner, he
should be the Cavaliers' top scorer
this fall. Brew Barron, a
second-year man with great
potential from New Jersey, should
add necessary strength as a
front runner. Rounding out the
veteran members of the squad are
Frank Andrews and Donald Steff.
Both third-year men have solid
credentials as experienced harriers
with the ability to outdistance the
rest of the pack. The loss of last
year's number one runner Greg
Lane will definitely hurt the team's
record this fall.

In preparation for their 1969
schedule, the squad has logged over
100 miles a week. Practice sessions
are held twice daily from 6:30 to
7:15 a.m. and from 4:00 to 5:30
p.m. with time divided between

speed work and regular jogging.
This tough conditioning should give
the Cavaliers the ability to spring a
few upsets against A.C.C.
cross-country powers Maryland,
Duke, and South Carolina.

The Cavalier runners open their
season, October 4, in a double dual
meet with U.N.C. and N.C. State.
