Progress Report
Offense Ready
The Cavaliers showed some
progress in last Saturday's final
intra squad scrimmage, although
many question marks still remain as
they make their final preparations
for the season opener against
Clemson in Scott Stadium Saturday.
According to offensive coordinator
Ken Campbell, the Cavalier
offense is "coming along fairly
well." However, most pre-season
scrimmaging has been against the
first-year team, and as Campbell
said, "Our freshmen are really no
indication of how Clemson is going
to be."
Danny Fassio has remained the
top quarterback for the Wahoos,
despite strong competition from
second-year men Mike Cabbage and
Larry Albert. Fassio will draw the
starting assignment against the
Tigers, although Cubbage and
Albert should both see some action.
The remainder of the backfield
is set, except for the fullback
position where sophomores Joe
Smith and Gary Helman are still
fighting for a starting berth in the
backfield with Fassio, tailback Dave
Wyncopp, and flanker Chuck
Mooser.
Reporting on last weekend's
final intra-squad scrimmage in Scott
Stadium, Campbell said, "We moved
the ball fairly well and we were
especially pleased with he poise of
some of our youngsters who lack
experience."
The major disappointment was
the inconsistency of the second
unit on offense, which often failed
on third down and long yardage.
Campbell feels that the Cavaliers
"are going to have to go with more
than one team" to beat Clemson.
With most of the strenuous
pre-season training out of the way
the Cavaliers now must wait until
Saturday to reconcile many of the
questions which have come up.
Frank Howard's Clemson Tigers
may well have a few answers
themselves.
