Crews Take Places
In Potomac Races
Entering five boats in the second
annual Washington Rowing Association
Regatta on the Potomac last
Saturday, the Virginia crew club
came away with a first, second,
third, and two fourth place finishes.
In the featured Varsity Heavyweight
Eight-oared event, the
Cavalier rowers qualified for the
finals by holding off a strong Marist
crew. In the finals, St. Joseph's of
Philadelphia won the 2,000 meter
race with an extremely fast 6:00.7
clocking. Virginia rowed fourth,
one-half length behind Georgetown,
last year's Dad Vail Champions, and
a full length behind Marietta
College. Virginia just edged
Villanova with George Washington
finishing a more distant sixth.
The Second Freshman Eight
scored the lone first place finish for
the Cavaliers, rowing past
Georgetown, George Washington,
and Villanova. The First Freshman
Eight finished third in their event,
succumbing to Marietta and
Georgetown. The Junior Varsity
rowed fourth in their race, and the
Varsity Four placed second behind
Villanova.
The importance of Saturday's
results lies in the fact that all of the
Virginia crews were able to row
close to, if not defeat, the nest
boats they will face this season.
This Saturday afternoon, April
12, the Virginia Rowing
Association will sponsor a regatta
on the placid waters of the Rivanna
Reservoir in Charlottesville. The
Freshmen race is scheduled for
12:30, the Junior Varsity contest at
1, and the concluding Varsity
match at 1:30.
Drexel Institute in Philadelphia
and the Citadel from Charleston,
South Carolina will provide the
competition. Drexel is expected to
have a very strong crew, the school
being located in one of the rowing
hearts of the East.
The Citadel is a relative
newcomer to the rowing ranks and
is considered an unknown quantity.
Early spring competition has indicated
that the Bulldogs can row
well. Both the Citadel and Drexel
contingencies will spend Friday
night in Charlottesville, leaving
town Saturday upon conclusion of
the regatta.
Virginia hopes a strong showing
may result in a sweep of all events.
It is the first home regatta for the
team, and they would like to do
well before the partisan crowd. The
Cavaliers hold a second regatta on
the Rivanna April 19, against East
Carolina and Virginia
Commonwealth University of
Richmond.
The Vars Eight will be
stroked by Harrison O'Connor,
with Tom Lincoln at seven, Jack
Plackter at six, George Peterson at
five, Steve Plott four, Pete Luke
three, Rick Davisson two, and Jon
Woodall in the bow. Buddy
Sydenstricker will cox the
180-pound average crew. Tim Kerr
coaches the Varsity, while Leo
Kayser assumes the Freshman coaching
duties.
In conjunction with the current
fund-raising campaign, the Rowing
Association is asking that spectators
purchase or show they have already
bought one dollar's worth of raffle
tickets. This will serve as a parking
fee.
The Rivanna Reservoir is
located just northwest of
Charlottesville; out route 29 north,
a left on Hydraulic Road, a left just
before the Rivanna bridge
