Boxing Finals Tonight

SAE Tops Phi Gam

SAE parlayed a quick moving
offense, extremely tight defense,
and the phenomenal outside shooting
of Sam Harvey to run away
from Phi Gam, 52-35 last night in

the IM basketball final. Harvey,
who finished with 21 points,
directed an attack that ran up a
16-4 score in the first ten minutes
of play.

SAE played a very aggressive
game, and beat the Phi Gams on the
boards very badly, with Dave
Mollesco and Chuck Edwards leading
the play off the boards.

Fists flew and noses crunched
last night in the velvet-roped ring of
Memorial Gymnasium as 28 boxers
of various sizes and styles faced off
in the semi-final round of the
Boxing Tournament. Fourteen
fighters survived to enter the finals
tonight at 8.

In the opening match Dick
Hotchkiss decisioned Toby
Summerour (Phi Delt). The scrappy
129-pounder fought two fast
periods, but in the third round
Summerour's wind abandoned
him. When he dropped his guard, it
was free sailing for Hotchkiss. The
next flyweight match provided the
crowd with the first upset of the
night as Clement Baskill (SPE) dove
head-on into Baskin (PEP) to gain a
decision over his wiry opponent.

In the bantamweight division
Terry Birkell (Sigma Nu) countered
his way to a victory over Bob
Clark (Phi Psi), and Bob Hill (PiKA)
won a close match from Richie
Hidalgo (St.A).

Action climaxed last night in the
157-pound class. John Cook provided
PiKA with its second finalist
as he used a series of counterpunches
to decision Stan Brock
(KA). Mark Krebs (SAE) boxed
defending champion Dick Jordon
(Phi Gam) next in what proved to
be the most skillful match of the
night. Krebs countered well at
times, but Jordan's windmill-style
punches were too aggressive for him.

At 167 pounds Frank Roda
(Sigma Nu) and Kyle Coble (DKE)
offered the crowd a change of pace
in a match with few punches
thrown. Roda won by a decision.
The second middleweight fight was
the upset of the tournament. Zach
Young (Zete), a first-yearman,
used his aggressiveness to full
advantage in fooling Jim Carrington.

Pete Schmidt (Zete) at
178 pounds was too much for Put
Renwick (KA), and the match was
called in the first round. Bob Giffen
(KA) fought two excellent rounds
in the next bout but lost his energy
and the decision to Bill Barlow in
the third period.

In the final two fights Gary Saft
(SPE) and Gary Helman demolished
their opponents, Gary Price (DKE)
and Alan Davis (PiLam).
