Cavayearlings Lose
To Baby Gobblers

By Dave Marshall
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Guard Bill McNeer of Virginia
Tech's Gobblets ignited a
prodigious scoring burst with three
quick baskets midway through the
first half to break open a close
game and start the Cavayearlings
well on their way to a 95-73 loss.

After McNeer hit the three
successive goals the Techmen got
their fast break unhitched. They
quickly took advantage of some
sloppy ballhandling by the
Cavayearlings and their own
aggressive rebounding to build a 20
point lead before the intermission.
The halftime score was 44-27.

For the second half Randy
Mannix, 6′8″ and 230 lbs, took over
the scoring burden. Mannix drove
for numerous lay-ups, dominated
both backboards and held Scott
McCandlish in check to lead the
Gobblets to their tenth win in
eleven contests. With approximately
four minutes left Mannix fouled
out but the Cavayearlings could do
little since their big man,
McCandlish, had fouled out about
four minutes earlier.

On the night McNeer and
Mannix led all scorers with 28 and
23 points, respectively. Mannix also
grabbed ten rebounds to help give
the Techmen a 50-37 advantage.
Tom Bagby, hitting on several long
set shots, and Frank Dewitt led the
Cavayearlings with 15 points
apiece. Chip Miller added 14,
McCandlish twelve and Tim Rash
11.

The Hokies on 38 of 78 field
goal attempts for 48.7 percent
while the Cavayearlings could only
manage 38.7 percent on 27 of 70
attempts.
