Gamecocks Sign
Negro Athlete,
Carlton Hayworth

Another Atlantic Coast Conference
football team has fallen from
the ranks of the lily white, Two
weeks ago, the University of South
Carolina announced the signing of
Carlton Hayward, a Negro from
Macon, Georgia.

Haywood, a 6-1, 174 pounder,
has played football for Sidney
Lanier High School in Macon for
the past several seasons. Although
Haywood was hurt for most of the
Fall, Gamecock recruiters signed
this fleet halfback on the basis of
his past performances.

Haywood scored four touchdowns
in the first and his only
game of the season, and this may
well have encouraged Paul Dietzel
and his scouts despite the fact that
Haywood did not return to action
due to a hamstring injury. Because
of this early injury, Carlton Haywood
has not been as highly sought
after as he might have been under
more healthy circumstances.

The University of South Carolina,
with the signing of the Negro,
has left only two schools in the
ACC without the talents of black
athletes. Both Clemson down in the
Valley of Death and the University
of Virginia remain all white in their
athletic programs.

In the Southeastern Conference,
a familiar football factory to all,
Auburn University recently acquired
a Negro athlete to bolster its
program. But instead of belonging
to a majority, the Tigers along with
the Tennessee Volunteers are the
only schools to have recruited and
signed a Negro to compete.
