Conference Slate
Full For Weekend

By Hugh Antrim

A full slate of action is
scheduled for ACC gridders this
weekend. North Carolina State's
Wolfpack and Wake Forest opened
Conference play last week, N.C.
State winning by a slim 10-6
margin.

Clemson and Wake Forest have
the dubious delight of playing
before television cameras as they
battle each other in Winston Salem.
The Deacons played some fine defense
against State and will rest heavily
on the performance of Fredd
Summers. Frank Howard's boys are
picked as the team to beat in the
ACC.

The league-leading Wolfpack
meets North Carolina at Chapel
Hill. This series started in 1894, and
obviously such a rivalry can
produce unexpected results. UNC's
strength lies in defense, while State
looks to wingback Bobby Hall to
key a potent running attack.

The University of South
Carolina will host the Blue Devils of
Duke in the opening game for both
teams. Warren Muir and Benny
Galloway bolster the Gamecock
offense, while Duke plans to rely
on air travel for their scoring
punch.

Maryland will go outside the
Conference against Florida State.
The Terps were winless last fall and
have hopes that QB Alan Pastrana
can find a way to victory. The
Seminoles posted a tie against Penn
State in the Gator Bowl and boast
the return of some thirty-five
lettermen from last year's squad.
Aside from Pastrana, Maryland is
counting on sophomores AI
Thomas and Tony Greene to arouse
a lethargic offensive.

The University of Virginia will
play football against Purdue
University this Saturday in
Lafayette, Indiana. So what else is
new?
