Cornell Turns Back Poloists

By Bill Buck

Capitalizing on three goals in
the fourth quarter by Pete Orthwein,
Cornell was able to turn
back Virginia 6-4 in a Polo match
played at Brook Hill Farm before
200 spectators.

Cornell, second in the Intercollegiate
Tournament this past
March, trailed for the first three
periods and then rallied on Orthwein's
clutch performance. Virginia
lead after the first quarter
2-1 and 4-1 following the second
period. Going into the disastrous
fourth period Virginia led
4-3 in which Coach Harry Robertshaw
termed the best three periods
of the season.

George Greenhalgh, playing in
the no. 1 position for the Cavaliers,
was held scoreless by the
Big Red defense. However, the star
of the day for Virginia was no.
2 man, Ray Norden, who scored
the "hat trick" while no. 3 man.
Randy Jones also contributed a
goal.

Captain Orthwein is truly an
outstanding collegiate polo star.
He is the second highest rated
player in intercollegiate polo.
Ironically, he trails only his twin
brother Steve who ranks as a
5 goal performer, and recently
helped Yale defeat the Cavaliers.

Virginia's record now stand at
two wins and three loses.
