Determined Tennis Team
Beats George Washington

Virginia's tennis team defeated
George Washington 5-4 last Saturday
to bring their season's record
to 6-4.

The Cavaliers took an early
3-1 lead, but both Jeff Podesta
and Biff Copper lost three set
matches to tie the match at 3-3.
Then George Washington won
third doubles and the first set of
first doubles, darkening Virginia's
prospects of victory to a glimmer.

Determination carried the net-men
on to win, however, as second
doubles won their second set 10-8
and seconds later Captain Eikenberry
slammed the final point
out of the court to win the third
set of first doubles and gain Virginia's
fifth point.

Eikenberry had a good day, winning
first singles in two sets 6-2
and 6-3, and combining with
Horace Thomas to win first
doubles. At number two Jeff
Podesta showed signs of not having
recovered his form after suffering
from a tennis elbow. He lost his
third straight three set match, but
recovered to team with Andy
Scheinman to win second doubles.

Scheinman lost the first set of
his third singles match, but he rebounded
well, winning the next two
sets 6-2 and 6-2. Randy Herring
lost 3-6 and 3-6 at number four,
and Bob Kain won by that same
score at number five. Both having
off days, Herring and Kain lost
third doubles 4-6 and 2-6.
