Ruggers Cop Carolina Tourney,
Beating Duke In Final Match
Part of the conquering horde of
Cavaliers that swept through North
Carolina last weekend, the Virginia
Rugby Club invaded the
Triangle area Saturday and Sunday
and came out with top honors
in the Carolina tournament against
Duke, North Carolina, and
NC State.
The first round opponent, NC
State's Wolfpack, gave Virginia
the worst scare of the spring season
before falling 3-0. The match
was played on a football field,
narrow by Rugby standards, and
the aroused home side dominated
the play. A penalty kick by Julian
Raney was the only score.
But the effects of a night sans
parties in a temporarily dry state
were miraculous. Sunday afternoon
against Duke, the Cavaliers
turned in perhaps their best effort
of the season. Raney's placements
were astoundingly accurate. He
booted three home for field goals
from varying distances, and converted
after one of the two Virginia
tries.
Both the tries were pushed across
by the Virginia scrum, which
pushed the Blue Devils about all
afternoon. Also outstanding was
fullback Jim Callan, whose long
punts and twisting runs helped keep
the ball on Duke's end of the field.
The final score was 17-3, a convincing
win over highly regarded
opposition.
This weekend the ruggers travel
to New York to play Old Blue,
hoping to prove that they are truly
the best in the East.
