Three U-Men Found Drowned

By Bruce Funzel

One of the most tragic events
to hit the University since the cow
died in the Rotunda took place
last Wednesday in the basement
of Memorial Gym. Three University
students were found dead
in the swimming pool.

The coroner's report stated that
an excess of chlorine in the blood,
and a muddy slime found in the
student's lungs were the cause of
death. Mr. Kenneth Ham Burger,
coroner for Albemarle County was
amazed at the rapid rate of
deterioration of all three students.
"It was as if the pool was full
of acid instead of water," Mr.
Burger was quoted as saying.

The students, first-year man
Winthrop Q. Wellington III, third-year
man Michael Alan Dunderhofp
and graduate Architecture
student Paul Arnold remained at
the University during Spring break
because of disagreements with their
parents.

Leroy Miller, apprentice janitor,
found the bodies on Friday when
he was making a routine check
to see if the filter had started
working yet. Miller, who has held
his present position at the University
for the past eleven years,
said that the filter broke down in
1958 and Mr. Steve Sebo, University
Athletic Director has been
saying it will be fixed tomorrow
every day since then.

When asked for his feelings on
the drownings, Coach Ralph Law,
varsity swimming coach, said "In
a way I'm glad this happened.
Maybe the Board of Visitors will
build us a new mud hole...er...
swimming pool, or at least send
us $1.98 for the new filter."
